1898: The United States formally declared war on Spain.

1901: New York became the first state to require automobile license plates; the fee was $1.

1918: Singer Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Va.

1945: Delegates from some 50 countries met in San Francisco to organize the United Nations.

2009: Bea Arthur, the tall, husky-voiced actress who starred in TV’s “Maude” and “The Golden Girls,” died of cancer in Los Angeles; she was 86.
