NOW: As people left the city and started shopping in malls in the suburbs, downtown business suffered. Both May Co. (better known now as Macy’s) and Hutzler’s closed their stores on Howard Street. And Hutzler’s, which had been a Maryland family-owned business for 132 years, closed for good in the late 1980’s. This is Howard Street looking north near Fayette Street.
